As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), I am deeply privileged to stand alongside generations of faculty and students, partners and distinguished members of the community. Together, we reflect on the remarkable achievements realised over seven decades of dedication and hard work. Building on this solid foundation, we unite to shape an even more promising future.

This 70th anniversary marks a significant milestone in our University’s journey. From its modest beginnings, HKBU has evolved into an internationally acclaimed institution renowned for its academic excellence. Our achievements are rooted in our unwavering commitment to our motto, “Faith and Perseverance.” We have steadfastly advanced knowledge, preserved cultural heritage and served society, all while remaining true to our mission of providing whole person education. Through these efforts, we have nurtured generations of leaders who have contributed to the vitality and progress of both the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR) and the nation as a whole.

In light of the evolving national landscape, HKBU is fully committed to supporting the vision articulated in the 2024-2035 master plan for building China into a global leader in education. We aim to contribute to the realisation of this goal by 2035. Leveraging our strengths in innovation and technology, we strive to translate cutting-edge research into practical applications that benefit society, facilitate knowledge transfer and nurture future-ready leaders equipped with transdisciplinary thinking, a global perspective and core competitiveness.

In our teaching and learning endeavours, HKBU is advancing transdisciplinary integration and pedagogical innovation by embedding Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our educational framework. This initiative enriches the student experience across a wide range of disciplines, including Creative Media/ Practice, Health and Drug Discovery, Data Analytics and AI, and Humanities and Cultures. Beginning in September 2025, all undergraduate students at HKBU are required to complete a General Education course on AI literacy, ensuring they are well-prepared to harness AI and innovative technologies in meeting contemporary challenges.

Over the past seventy years, HKBU has been dedicated to broadening the scope and impact of its educational offerings, providing quality education that benefits an ever-wider community. Since its establishment in 1975, our School of Continuing Education (SCE) has played a pivotal role in advancing higher education and vocational training in the HKSAR. SCE offers diverse opportunities for lifelong learning across all sectors, nurturing many influential professionals who have made significant contributions to society.

The year 2025 promises to be remarkable for HKBU, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the SCE and the 20th anniversary of Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University. Additionally, the Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School will also mark its 20th anniversary. These milestones provide a splendid prelude to our 70th anniversary celebrations in 2026. On this special occasion, the University will unveil a series of engaging events, inviting the HKBU community, stakeholders and partners from all sectors to join us in celebrating our achievements and collaboratively charting an exciting new course for the future.

As the Chairman of the Council and the Court, it is my great honour to serve the University at this pivotal moment in its history. Together with our dedicated faculty, students, alumni, stakeholders, as well as collaborators in education, research and professional sectors worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to exploring new frontiers, supporting the aspirations of the HKSAR and the nation and empowering talented individuals from around the globe to pursue their dreams here at HKBU. As we move forward, let us collectively embrace a promising future.

In 2026, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) celebrates the 70th anniversary of its establishment. From its humble beginning in 1956 as a post-secondary college, HKBU has transformed into an esteemed institution recognised for its excellence in learning and teaching, research, and service to the community. Most important of all, this remarkable journey has been made possible by the unwavering dedication and passion of those who believed in our vision and mission.

In the past seven decades, HKBU has made extraordinary strides. Our commitment to delivering academic excellence in a caring, creative and global culture, as well as the persistent efforts devoted to the development of the whole person, laid the solid foundation upon which the University nurtured generations of young talents who provided the momentum for the development of Hong Kong, our motherland, and beyond.

Privileged to be a member of the vibrant HKBU community, I am both humbled and immensely proud of the legacy we have built together. To our students, staff, alumni, community partners and supporters, thank you for helping HKBU thrive and flourish over the years. Our 70th anniversary milestone is not just a celebration of our past, but a powerful reminder of the future we can shape together. As we honour our rich heritage, let us continue to strive for excellence and chart new frontiers, while at the same time, contribute to Hong Kong’s integration into the overall development of the country and Hong Kong’s continuous growth!

A wide variety of celebration activities have been organised by the University throughout the year. Ranging from engaging ceremonies, alumni gatherings, academic events, staff and student activities, as well as community engagement initiatives, the celebration activities are precious opportunities for BUers and our friends to gather and reminisce about our common legacy, celebrate the achievements we all treasure, and step up collective efforts to drive the University to new heights. I sincerely look forward to seeing you at these activities!
