HKBU Milestones

  • 1956

    Hong Kong Baptist College was founded by the Baptist Convention of Hong Kong as a private post-secondary institution, comprising six academic departments: Chinese Language, English Language, Sociology, Mathematics and Science, Civil Engineering and Business Administration.

    The first batch of graduates.

  • 1961

    1961

    The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts were founded.

  • 1966

    1966

    Baptist College’s permanent campus on Waterloo Road was completed.

  • 1968

    1968

    The Department of Communication was founded, offering Hong Kong’s first communication programme.

  • 1970

    1970

    The College was recognised by the Government as Hong Kong’s first privately run four-year post-secondary institution.

  • 1971

    1971

    The Faculty of Social Sciences was established.

  • 1972

    1972

    The College was granted approval to change its Chinese name to “香港浸會學院”.

  • 1975

    1975

    The School of Continuing Education was founded.

  • 1978

    1978

    The Community Hall was completed and inaugurated by Governor Sir Murray MacLehose.

HKBU Milestones

  • 1981

    1981

    The United Kingdom Council for National Academic Awards affirmed the Institution’s potential to offer degree courses.

  • 1983

    1983

    The College was brought under the aegis of the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee, now known as the University Grants Committee, and officially became a fully-funded public tertiary institution.

  • 1986

    1986

    The first batch of Bachelor‘s degree programmes was introduced on the institution's 30th anniversary.

  • 1990

    1990

    The first Honorary Doctorate degrees were awarded to renowned scholars and distinguished individuals.

  • 1994

    Hong Kong Baptist College was officially renamed Hong Kong Baptist University.

  • 1995

    1995

    Sir Run Run Shaw officiated at the HKBU Shaw Campus grand opening.

  • 1995

    The second campus, the Shaw Campus, was completed on Renfrew Road; the Waterloo Road Campus was renamed Ho Sin Hang Campus.

    The Baptist University Road Campus commenced operation.

  • 1999

    The School of Chinese Medicine was established.

    Student residence halls officially opened.

    The inauguration and groundbreaking ceremony of Beijing Normal University – Hong Kong Baptist University United International College took place in Zhuhai.

    The Shek Mun Campus was unveiled.

    The Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation was established.

  • 2012

    The HKBU School of Chinese Medicine - Lui Seng Chun came into operation.

    HKBU announced its Institutional Strategic Plan 2018-2028.

    The first Global University Film Awards were held by the Academy of Film.

    HKBU launched the "Beat the Virus, BU & I" campaign to provide support to society in a variety of areas, including healthcare, mental well-being and care for the community.

    “HKBU Chinese Medicine Telemedicine Centre Against COVID-19” was established to provide free online consultation service for over 41,000 patients. HKBU was also appointed as the operators of the Kai Tak Holding Centre by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

    The School of Creative Arts was established.

    The Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences were consolidated as Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

    The Zhuhai campus was renamed Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University.

    The Jockey Club Campus of Creativity officially came into operation.

  • 2025

    The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong will commence operations in phases in December 2025. HKBU was awarded the operation service deed by the Government.
